The Goods and Services Tax (GST) is India's unified destination-based indirect tax system, implemented in July 2017 to replace multiple cascading levies like VAT, service tax, and central excise. Whether you are a business owner invoicing a client, a freelancer billing a corporate project, or a consumer checking a retail receipt, calculating 18% GST accurately is an everyday necessity.
The 18% tax bracket is by far the most widely used slab in India, covering commercial IT services, software development, restaurant dining, financial advising, and thousands of manufactured manufactured goods.
India categorizes all goods and services into four major structured GST tiers:
GST is partitioned based on transaction geography:
When you know the base price of a service or product and need to quote the total tax-inclusive price:
GST Amount = Base Price × 0.18
Total Price = Base Price × 1.18
Suppose a freelance web developer quotes ₹10,000 for a landing page audit:
When you receive a final bill of ₹1,180 and need to know how much was the underlying cost versus tax:
A common mistake is taking 18% of the gross total. Because the 18% was calculated on the net base, you must divide by 1.18:
Base Price = Total Price ÷ 1.18
GST Amount = Total Price - Base Price
For a consolidated restaurant or retail bill of ₹1,180:
Instead of memorizing decimal formulas or manually adjusting spreadsheets, use our free GST Calculator. You can switch between adding or removing GST across all 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28% slabs with a single click, inspecting CGST and SGST breakdowns instantly.
To add 18% GST: Multiply the amount by 0.18 for the tax amount, or multiply by 1.18 for the gross total. For 1,000 rupees: Tax = 180 rupees, Total = 1,180 rupees.
Divide the inclusive total by 1.18. Original Price = Total ÷ 1.18. For 1,180 rupees: Original = 1,180 ÷ 1.18 = 1,000 rupees, and GST amount = 180 rupees.
For intra-state sales within the same state, 18% GST is split equally into 9% CGST (Central) and 9% SGST (State). For inter-state sales across state borders, the full 18% is collected as IGST (Integrated).
