Return on Investment (ROI) is the most widely cited financial ratio in business and personal investing. It evaluates the financial profitability or efficiency of an expenditure relative to its cost.
The mathematical calculation is simple:
ROI (%) = [ (Net Profit) ÷ (Cost of Investment) ] × 100%
Where Net Profit = Final Value (or Total Revenue) - Initial Cost.
For every dollar spent on ads, the business earned back $2.50 in net profit ($3.50 in gross revenue).
Standard ROI ignores time horizons. A 50% ROI earned over 6 months is an exceptional annualized return, while a 50% ROI earned over 15 years represents a sluggish return of barely 2.7% per year.
To compare investments of different lifespans, calculate Annualized ROI:
Annualized ROI = [ (1 + Total ROI)^(1 / n) ] - 1
Where n is the number of years invested.
Quickly calculate percentage increases, growth margins, and investment gains using our free Percentage Calculator.
ROI = [(Final Value of Investment - Initial Cost of Investment) / Initial Cost of Investment] × 100%.
Standard ROI measures total gain regardless of time, whereas Annualized ROI calculates the geometric average annual return, making investments of different durations directly comparable.
