Whether composing a punchy tweet, configuring pay-per-click advertising copy, drafting an SMS broadcast, or tweaking meta tags for Google Search, character limits govern modern digital communications.
Exceeding a character limit results in truncated text (...), broken layouts, or unexpected multi-part SMS billing charges.
Google and other major search engines do not technically limit title tags and meta descriptions by strict character counts; they measure text in pixels (approximately 600px width for titles on desktop). However, character counts serve as the standard working guideline:
<title>):
<meta name="description">):
| Platform | Text Element | Maximum Character Limit | |---|---|---| | Twitter / X | Free Post | 280 characters | | Twitter / X | Premium Post | 25,000 characters | | Instagram | Post Caption | 2,200 characters | | Instagram | Profile Bio | 150 characters | | LinkedIn | Post Update | 3,000 characters | | LinkedIn | Profile Headline | 220 characters | | YouTube | Video Title | 100 characters | | YouTube | Description | 5,000 characters |
A standard single SMS text message is limited to 160 characters. However, this rule only applies if every character belongs to the standard GSM 7-bit default alphabet (basic English letters, numbers, and basic punctuation).
If you include even a single special character outside the GSM-7 set (such as an accented character, an em-dash, or an emoji like ๐), the cellular carrier switches encoding to UCS-2 (UTF-16):
In JavaScript and modern programming languages, counting characters is not as simple as checking .length:
"hello".length; // 5
"๐".length; // 2 (uses a surrogate pair of two 16-bit code units)
Complex emojis and family glyphs (like ๐จโ๐ฉโ๐งโ๐ฆ) can register as 7 to 11 JavaScript length units despite visually appearing as a single glyph on screen.
