Created in 2004 by John Gruber and Aaron Swartz, Markdown was designed with a clear, elegant mission: to allow writers and developers to create rich text using an easy-to-read, easy-to-write plain text format that converts cleanly into semantically valid XHTML/HTML.
Today, Markdown is the undisputed standard for technical documentation, GitHub READMEs, static site generators (Next.js, Astro), chat applications (Slack, Discord), and modern CMS workflows.
Headings are created using the hash (#) symbol, matching HTML <h1> through <h6>:
# Heading 1 (Page Title)
## Heading 2 (Major Section)
### Heading 3 (Subsection)
#### Heading 4
##### Heading 5
###### Heading 6
| Style | Syntax | Result |

| Italic | *italic text* | italic text |
| Bold & Italic | ***bold and italic*** | bold and italic |
| ~~Strikethrough~~ | ~~strikethrough~~ | ~~strikethrough~~ |
| Inline Code | `const x = 10;` | const x = 10; |
Use asterisks (*), hyphens (-), or plus signs (+):
- First bullet item
- Second bullet item

Fenced code blocks are demarcated by three backticks (```) with an optional language identifier for syntax highlighting:
```typescript
interface UserSession {
id: string;
email: string;
isActive: boolean;
}
```
