In everyday conversation, when someone mentions the "average", they almost always mean the arithmetic mean. However, in mathematics, data science, and economics, an average is a broader concept known as a measure of central tendency — a single representative number that summarizes an entire distribution of values.
Depending on the shape of your data and the presence of extreme outliers, using the wrong type of average can lead to heavily distorted conclusions.
The Mean is computed by adding every value in the dataset and dividing by the total count of numbers.
Mean (x̄) = (x₁ + x₂ + ... + xₙ) ÷ n = (Σ x) ÷ n
Dataset: [4, 8, 6, 5, 3, 7]
4 + 8 + 6 + 5 + 3 + 7 = 33633 ÷ 6 = 5.5The Median is the literal middle value when a dataset is sorted in ascending order. It splits the dataset into two equal halves (50% above and 50% below).
(n + 1) / 2.Dataset: [12, 3, 5, 8, 20, 15]
[3, 5, 8, 12, 15, 20]8 and 12(8 + 12) ÷ 2 = 10The Mode is the number that appears most frequently in a dataset.
Dataset: [7, 2, 4, 7, 9, 2, 7, 3]
2 appears twice, 7 appears 3 times, others appear once.7| Measure | Definition | Best Used For | Resistant to Outliers? | |---|---|---|---| | Mean | Sum divided by count | Normal, evenly spaced data | ❌ Highly sensitive | | Median | Middle sorted value | Skewed data (salaries, home prices) | ✅ Highly resistant | | Mode | Most common occurrence | Categorical data, retail inventory | ✅ Unaffected by extremes |
