Sales tax is a consumption tax imposed by state, provincial, and local governments on the retail sale of goods and specified services. Unlike gross income taxes collected annually, sales tax is collected at the point of purchase by the retailer and remitted to the government.
Whether you run an e-commerce store, balance freelance bookkeeping, or review consumer receipts, understanding how to calculate sales tax forward and in reverse is an essential business arithmetic skill.
When you know the pre-tax base price of an item and your local tax percentage, calculating the tax amount and total customer price requires two simple mathematical steps.
Sales Tax Amount = Pre-Tax Price * (Tax Rate / 100)
Total Price = Pre-Tax Price + Sales Tax Amount = Pre-Tax Price * (1 + Tax Rate / 100)
A customer purchases a laptop priced at $850.00 in an area with an 8.25% combined state and municipal sales tax rate:
Alternatively, multiply directly by the multiplier factor (1 + 0.0825 = 1.0825):
$850.00 * 1.0825 = $920.13
A common mistake made by bookkeepers and small business owners is attempting to calculate pre-tax prices by simply subtracting the tax rate from the total.
Why subtraction fails: If a receipt total is $108.25 and the tax was 8.25%, subtracting 8.25% of $108.25 gives:
$108.25 - ($108.25 * 0.0825) = $108.25 - $8.93 = $99.32 (INCORRECT)
Because tax was originally added to the original base price, not the higher total, you must use division.
Pre-Tax Base Price = Total Paid / (1 + Tax Rate / 100)
Extracted Sales Tax = Total Paid - Pre-Tax Base Price
You receive a receipt showing a total charge of $250.00 inclusive of 7.5% sales tax:
In the United States, sales tax is levied at both state and municipal/county levels. Five states currently impose zero state-level sales tax:
Other states combine statewide rates (typically 4% to 7.25%) with local county and district levies, resulting in combined maximum rates reaching over 10% in parts of California, Tennessee, Louisiana, and Washington.
