Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely recognized clinical screening tool used by healthcare providers, insurers, and researchers to assess whether an individual's weight falls within a healthy statistical range for their height.
Devised in the 1830s by Belgian polymath Adolphe Quetelet, BMI provides a straightforward, non-invasive mathematical ratio that correlates reasonably well with body fat percentages across broad populations.
BMI is calculated by dividing body mass by the square of body height:
BMI = Weight (kg) ÷ [Height (m)]²
Example: A person weighing 70 kg who is 1.75 meters tall:
BMI = 70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = 70 ÷ 3.0625 ≈ 22.86 kg/m²
BMI = [Weight (lbs) × 703] ÷ [Height (inches)]²
Example: A person weighing 160 lbs who is 5 feet 10 inches tall (70 inches):
BMI = (160 × 703) ÷ (70 × 70) = 112,480 ÷ 4,900 ≈ 22.96 kg/m²
The WHO categorizes adult BMI values as follows:
| BMI Range | Classification | Health Risk Profile | |---|---|---| | Below 18.5 | Underweight | Nutritional deficiency, weakened immunity | | 18.5 – 24.9 | Normal / Healthy Weight | Lowest statistical risk for cardiovascular diseases | | 25.0 – 29.9 | Overweight | Moderate increased risk of hypertension | | 30.0 – 34.9 | Class I Obesity | Elevated risk of diabetes and cardiac issues | | 35.0 – 39.9 | Class II Obesity | High risk | | 40.0 and above | Class III Obesity (Severe) | Extremely high risk |
Note: For individuals of Asian descent, many health organizations recommend a slightly lower overweight cutoff of 23.0 and obesity threshold of 27.5 due to differences in body fat distribution.
While BMI is invaluable as a population screening heuristic, it has well-documented limitations when evaluating individuals:
For a comprehensive assessment, doctors pair BMI with waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) and body composition scans.
