Every web designer, graphic artist, and front-end developer has encountered the familiar opening phrase:
"Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua..."
For decades, this scrambled passage has served as the default placeholder text for mockups, prototypes, wireframes, and type specimen books. But where did it come from, and why do we continue to use it instead of readable English?
Contrary to popular belief, Lorem Ipsum is not pure nonsensical gibberish. Its origins date back over two thousand years to 45 BC in classical Latin literature.
In 1982, Richard McClintock, a Latin professor at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, untangled its lineage. He searched classical literature for one of the rarest Latin words in the text — consectetur — and traced the passage directly to Sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of Marcus Tullius Cicero's philosophical treatise:
De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum (On the Ends of Good and Evil)
The original philosophical text begins:
"Neque porro quisquam est qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit..." (Translation: "Nor is there anyone who loves grief itself, that pursues it and wishes to have it, simply because it is grief...")
During the 16th century, an unknown typesetter took a galley of Cicero's type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book, creating the enduring standard that survived into the digital desktop publishing revolution of the 1980s via Aldus PageMaker.
Why not simply paste a paragraph of English text from a news article or Wikipedia?
When clients or stakeholders review an early website prototype populated with readable English text, their attention naturally shifts toward critiquing the wording: "Why does this headline say that? Is this our final marketing copy?"
Lorem Ipsum provides a visually realistic distribution of letters without readable content, forcing reviewers to evaluate layout, font hierarchy, whitespace, and visual balance.
Unlike repetitive sequences ("content content content" or "test test test"), Latin passages feature a natural variation of short, medium, and long words. This accurately simulates real editorial text, demonstrating how line wraps, hyphenations, and paragraph blocks will flow in production.
While invaluable during wireframing, placeholder text should be replaced with real content as soon as high-fidelity user testing begins. Real users cannot complete usability tasks when buttons and instructions read "Lorem ipsum dolor".
